Kathmandu, January 6 – Situated in the heart of Kathmandu, Dharahara is one of Nepal's most significant historical and cultural landmarks. It stands as a symbol of Nepal’s glorious past and architectural heritage. The original Dharahara was built in 1832 by then-Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa.
The devastating earthquake of 2015 completely destroyed the iconic structure, but recognizing its historical importance, the government reconstructed it with a blend of modern technology and traditional design. The newly built Dharahara was inaugurated in 2021, reflecting the essence of the original tower with added modern amenities.
The new Dharahara is 79 meters tall with 24 floors. It features facilities like elevators, an observation deck, a museum, and a park. Visitors can ascend to the top to enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.
Since its reconstruction, Dharahara has become a major tourist attraction. It has drawn a significant increase in both domestic and international visitors, contributing to Nepal’s tourism industry and preserving its historical narrative.
Dharahara continues to play a vital role in preserving Kathmandu’s architectural, historical, and cultural identity. It now stands as a bridge between Nepal’s ancient heritage and its modern aspirations.
